Class Lammont T. Hammond receives the Bronze Star Medal with Combat
Distinguishing Device from Brig. Gen. John Love at U.S. Naval Hospital,
Naples, Italy March 2 for his actions while assigned to Company B, 1st
Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 3, Marine Expeditionary
Brigade. Hammond exposed himself to accurate enemy fire as he maneuvered
more than 50 meters to a wounded Marine forward of his position. Hammond
placed himself between the enemy and the casualty without regard for his own
safety. He assisted in applying occlusive dressings to wounds, performed an
emergency cricothyroidotomy and carried out CPR. After evacuating the
Marine, he returned to the front where he retrieved another fallen Marine
who had been struck by gunfire. Hammond displayed outstanding medical
proficiency in the midst of an intense and sustained firefight. Photo by
